What is an Advertising course?
After finishing a diploma in graphic design, tinkering with design tools, learning design theroy, grids, typography, style guides, export settings and making sure my document was design on CNYK color instead of RGB for proper printing.
I had a lot of questions entering my advertising degree such as
"what do you actually learn?"
As someone who had been learning the practical side of design it was hard to grasp how someone could go about esentially doing the same thing I was doing, which is making commercial creativity, without learning the technical processes.
Having completed both courses I'm going to give you a quick overview on who these skillsets compliment eachother.
As shown by YouTuber & Designer Satori Graphics.
here is an example of how the different thinking styles of advertising mindset to a graphic design mindset and effect the result of the meduim you're creating for.
3 main tips for making this theroy come true.
1Understand your audience
2 align your design with the marketing stretegy
3 emphasisze clarity and readability
as outlined by Satori, Something with great design fundimentals doesnt mean it will be a great ad.
Marketing/advertising is about driving a message.
But how can you do that without design skills
This is where my love for advertising comes into play.
It's about raw communciation brutal honesty. designing an idea before you pick the medium. and its the base for creative direction before you start designing.
The power of creaive direction comes from the ability to communicate and display ideas, even potentially without the need for design principles, but you do need to understand communication.
"In a Nutshell" Boiling it down to its essense" Saying less is more
Simple is King. When it comes to pitching an idea. how do you boil something down to its essense.
